Monitoring for key Moodle health checks

Moodle Uptime Monitor is an administration tool plugin maintained by Frederick Harju. It helps monitor whether a Moodle site is available, whether cron has not run for a configurable period, and whether maintenance mode has remained enabled longer than expected.

✦ Configuration

Key setup options

After installing the plugin, it requires a free or paid UptimeRobot API key to function. Configuration is available in Moodle at Site administration > Plugins > Admin tools > Uptime Monitor.

Monitor types

Keyword (Poll) monitoring checks the site’s /admin/tool/upmon/check.php endpoint for the keyword "upmon PASSES". Heartbeat (Push) monitoring uses the plugin’s scheduled task to send periodic pings to UptimeRobot and requires a paid UptimeRobot plan.

Cron monitoring

Cron alerts can be enabled so the health check fails if cron has not run within a configured number of minutes. The default threshold is 60 minutes.

Maintenance mode monitoring

Maintenance mode alerts can be enabled so the health check fails if the site remains in maintenance mode for longer than a configured threshold. The default threshold is 60 minutes.

Security token

The health check endpoint can optionally be protected with a security token.
